Known for her fusion of classical and African-American musical traditions, Margaret Bonds was one of the most influential figures of the 20th century classical music landscape. Studying with renowned composers Florence Price and Roy Harris, Bonds gained notoriety for her unique ability to blend various musical styles and influences, and collaborated with such prominent artists as poet Langston Hughes. Her multi-movement work Credo is a powerfully poignant piece that redefined the traditional approach to a "Credo" setting; rather than using text from the Mass Ordinary, Bonds incorporates text from W.E.B. DuBois' prose poem of the same name—transforming this piece into a commitment not to a belief in God, but to a belief that all people are created equal. With its expressive melodies and intricate counterpoint, Credo illustrates Bonds' artistic brilliance and contribution to the musical world of the 20th century.
This concert brings to light a new arrangement of Credo for chorus and brass quintet by Filipino-American composer Allan Laiño, who also serves as the Artistic Director of DC's Congressional Chorus. Soprano Marlissa Hudson returns to the Bay Area as soprano soloist, and the Chorale once again joins forces with Santa Clara University Choirs and musicians from San José Chamber Orchestra to present the West Coast premiere of this compelling new arrangement.
